Is there any table of information showing estimated popularity of various
Linux distributions ?
ie. something like that;

Total Number of Linux users : xxx.xxx.xxx

Distribution : Red Hat
Version : 9
Number of user : xxx.xxx
Popularity (%) : xx.xx
===================
Distribution : SuSe
Version : 8
Number of user : xxx.xxx
Popularity (%) : xx.xx
===================
Distribution : Debian
Version : 3
Number of user : xxx.xxx
Popularity (%) : xx.xx
===================
Distribution : XXXX
Version : XX
Number of user : xxx.xxx
Popularity (%) : xx.xx

slashdot had an article today or yesterday about popularity of distros, that
was discussing the growth rate of some distros. you might find numbers by
following those threads. I vaguely recall RH getting something like 60% or
70%.

Nope, you could mail those distro and ask them how much they
sold, but then it doesn't tell anything. Many distro are
download-able and a single downloaded/bought distro might be
installed a few hundred times or more, perfectly legal.
;)

Remove +SIGNS and www. if you expect an answer, sorry for

Furthermore, someone might have 8 copies of "boxed sets" lying around
not in use, and be actually _using_ one of the ones for which sales
can't be counted.

Not specifically as you listed, but there is a pseudo-popularity
figure that can be gleaned from DistroWatch. DistroWatch
(http://www.distrowatch.com) lists the number of page hits on a
particular distribution's page per day.

Of course, this doesn't count downloads, sales, dollars in sales, or
anything like that, but it's a measure at least. Don't forget that
caches can skew the numbers, but again it's just a measure.

Interesting to see that Knoppix is more popular than Xandros or
Lindows, or Red Hat or SUSE or Slackware, for that matter....

That is interesting, I can count several reasons. The first is that
there are Windows users curious and want to try it before they buy it.

The other is Linux users such as myself that use Knoppix when they have
f*cked up and need access to their Linux partitions to fix it :)

Or Linux users like me who see Knoppix as a great Debian installer and
use it to set up Debian desktops.

Adding that it is explosive how practical linux or nix is.

Plonk a windows machine in the middle of nowhere(Hundreds of miles from Home
Data centers and media storage facilities,Yup those large rack mounted
things that take up whole rooms with optical internal links etc.)with a
modem ,no drivers and a telephone line.
Now do the same with a Open Source type system and try to get the modem to
work.
Which system will work with the modem first .without a compiler or the OS
CDs that you left behind in high security storage because the serial
numbers.

Kernel is a good thing...lol

Careful - the stats from Distrowatch show only page hits (not sales
and not downloads).

So, what it actually shows is that more people hit Distrowatch pages
to look at Knoppix than to look at Red Hat or SUSE or Slackware...

Knoppix is quite a rising star; I use it frequently to fix up systems
- unless I use LNX-BBC - and I also use it as a sort of portable Linux
desktop.

That's true. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Knoppix actually were one
of the most downloaded distributions. A good live CD is always handy, and
I guess many people have it. It doesn't mean they are actually using it as
their primary distro.

Distrowatch has a sort of popularity table going back a couple of years...
